High-level police team visits Garu

RANCHI: A high-level police team headed by director general of police G S Rath visited Satnadiya region of Latehar district on Friday to probe the attack on escort party of MP Inder Singh Namdhari that killed 10 police personnel and one civilian. The team comprising IG (special branch) S N Pradhan, IG (Ranchi) Rezi Dungdung, CRPF DIG B K Sharma, Palamu DIG Suman Gupta and Latehar SP D B Sharma visited the spot. Chief minister Arjun Munda had sought a detailed inquiry into the incident soon after the Maoist attack, in which police escort team following Namdhari's vehicle was blown off in a landmine blast and an encounter followed. Things went awry after the Independent MP from Chatra addressed the media accusing police of misrepresenting facts and sought resignation of the DGP accusing him of not being able to handle the situation properly. Refuting charges of deliberately delaying the programme in Mahuadar from where he left for Daltonganj late in the afternoon, he stressed that he had informed the local police about his movement. Questions were raised after the Maoists owned responsibility for targeting the police team following Namdhari, but indirectly admitted that Namdhari was not their target. The Maoists' Koyal Shankh Zonal Committee (KSZC) spokesperson Sudhir told media that they were targeting the police team and also apologized for death and injury of a civilian caught in the gunbattle with the men in khaki. The DGP and his team arrived in Latehar on a helicopter on Friday and went by car to the site. Talking to TOI, Rath said it was a routine visit to any place of occurrence where 10 police personnel and one civilian were killed.
